TABLESCAPING: Defined and Resurrected

I’ve never seen a good definition—so here’s mine.

Tablescaping

verb

Artfully combining elements such as color, texture, height, and size to set a visually appealing and emotionally evocative table.

The very first time I hit “publish” on this blog, I shared a tablescape. That was July 22, 2010, and we were celebrating 100 weeks of tablescaping at Between Naps on the Porch. I then proceeded to share tablescapes—and tablescape events—virtually every week for a very long time.

Until one day I stopped.

Oh, I’ve shared some table-related posts with you over the last while, but it’s been far too long since I’ve spent time playing in the dishes! I’ve missed it.

I got a little lazy with my tablescaping while living in 300 sq. ft. for over two years. Imagine that! But when I did want to add some natural color and texture, all I had to do was take a walk! I miss that, too.

Leaves, hickory nuts, and acorns at the ready!

But today, on this cloudy day in East Tennessee in our small-town victorian farmhouse dining room (that has no overhead light—yet), I decided to share a Summer to Fall tablescape.

Vintage golden-hued damask linens lay the foundation for this super simple table.

  • Gold chargers.
  • “Everyday” Gibson white plates
  • Royal Cauldon V853 plates
  • Oneida Raphael flatware
  • Gorham two-toned napkin rings
  • Clear goblets; pattern unknown

These English china plates are old and very crazed. We won’t eat off of them, but they’re beautiful, aren’t they? Such detail! Look closely at the subtle diamond pattern in the navy banding.

Gold and cobalt is one of my favorite go-to color combos for this transitional time of year. And using the heavy footed bowl as a quick centerpiece was a no-brainer. It’s got good Autumn color and great texture.

I plan to milk these last days of Summer for all they’re worth . . .

and then I’ll turn my thoughts to my favorite season!

What about you? Have you already started decorating for Fall? What’s  your favorite season?

Comments

  1. So elegant! A fall theme is lovely, ’tis true. I am probably more of a fan of the colors of springtime, though.

  2. I change from Americana to Fall the week after Labor Day. 2 weeks ago I thought i might go ahead and swap, then life got in the way. So next week it is. Not sure my favorite season. Just know it is not summer.

Susan……………so so good to hear from you with as always a beautiful and inspiring blog. Please keep me on your list…….have a beautiful day, …Blessings always…………dolores

  4. I didn’t realize your first post was a tablescape, but I do recall it’s how we got acquainted! Love that English china, and I am like you, loving the blue & gold together, or, as Mountaineers call it, the gold and blue!
I’ve begun pulling a few things to transition, but feel the need to really spend some time in my storage unit to pull a few more, and maybe put a few things back in. Tomorrow is another day……….:)
