FARMHOUSE MASTER BEDROOM REVEAL

Renovation is not for the faint-hearted—or for the impatient!

Our master bedroom renovation technically began in December 2018, right before we moved in. This reveal’s been a long time coming! I think it was worth the wait.

I always like to take you back to my first impression of a space, so here’s the listing photo.

And then began the mess-making!

Removal of wallpaper—and paint on wood floors. Cleaning coal dust and previous owner’s attempt to insulate from the fireplace.

Then the improvements . . .

Close existing door to master bath (and add new entrance through existing closet). Add paneled wainscot.

And finally . . . cleaning those gorgeous heart pine floors in preparation for finishing.

At that point, we called it “good” and moved on to more pressing projects.

But after almost two years, it was time to circle back to the bedroom. Of course, when we did, we had to make messes again before we could make progress.

Rotted window repair comes before painting.

Installing hard-wired lights on BOTH sides of the bed requires running wire up and over the window. Good thing I know a dependable handy man! Imbrie Articulating Sconce from Rejuvenation (aged brass finish w/ 8″ Opal Eastmoreland shade)

But finally there was progress!

Painted walls, fireplace, and trim + marble tile around fireplace.

Bedside lights

Then we waited again for a few months while I tried to find someone to hang wallpaper. And FINALLY the day arrived!

Funny how a piece of wallpaper laid out on a work table can make me so giddy!

So here’s the Master Bedroom now.

I plan to sit with it awhile before hanging pictures—and get through the in-process kitchen renovation.

I’ll take a vintage handmade Italian tapestry over the bed (instead of a window) any day!

Texture!

This Antique Eastlake chair in perfect condition was a $15 steal at auction.

The simple cotton rug (with felt pad) softens the floor while adding a bit of “casual” to the room. An antique wool rug would have been too stuffy!

The duvet cover and curtain fabric were thrift store finds. So was the chandelier.

The Greene County, Tennessee chest was an auction find, too. We’re really missing in-person auctions these days!

Some of you are wondering about the one corner of the room I haven’t showed you. Am I right?

Here it is in all of its unfinished glory—a project for another day.

Unfinished entrance to the (still-to-be-renovated) Master Bathroom.

Thanks for stopping by! I hope you and yours are staying well these days. Hang in there . . . Spring is coming!

Love it! So beautiful, all of it! But my favorite I think is the wallpaper. We recently took out all of our French country yellow and red from 12 years ago and went to beige walls with lots of navy! I love navy! Your master bedroom looks amazing! You are right well worth the wait!!
    Love,
    Cindy

    • Cindy, I don’t really have a favorite color, but if I HAD to choose one, it’s navy! And if I HAD to choose a single favorite decorating style, it would be French Country. 🙂 Wish I could have seen yours, but glad you’re enjoying the change.

  2. Love that you found wonderful duvet cover & curtains via thrifting! Those items are hard to find. I differ with you, though, on the rug. I think it would have taken a while to find a wonderfully patterned geometric wool carpet.

  3. Wow, Susan, you have impeccable taste and mad skills with your Renaissance Man! Bravo!

  4. You had me at blue and white, as always. I know that you must be relishing your beautiful retreat every single evening and in the morning when you rise. We’ve just come out on the other side of a major renovation of our home and front and back yards. We also have more projects; we were tired and brought everything to a halt shortly before Christmas. We’ll get back to the remaining projects at a later, maybe much later date. Carry on, brave soldier. CherryKay

    • Cherry Kay, I knew you were doing major work on your home, and I’ve looked occasionally to see if you posted anything on your blog, but alas… I’m sure it’s all wonderful, and I hope you’re enjoying your new spaces as much as we’re beginning to enjoy ours. As for your “we were tired” sentiment, I hear you! Trust me, it’ll be there waiting whenever you decide to pick it back up.

  5. Susan, once again I am going to say you are the Dynamic Duo. Every element is stunning. I have been a big fan on navy for many years.
