Five Minute Friday: HOSPITALITY

I used to think hospitality was all about inviting people in to a clean house to sit at a beautiful table and partake of a carefully-planned and prepared meal.

No more.

I now see “hospital” so very clearly when I look at the word hospitality.

Hospital.

If I extend hospitality, true hospitality, I must offer a healing hand, word, smile. I must look at those around me—friends, acquaintances, strangers—closely enough to see them.

Closely enough to notice pain, fear, worry.

I must extend my hand, open my door, invite them to my table regardless of whether the house is clean, the good dishes set in place, or cloth napkins at the ready. Regardless of whether a full meal is cooked—or cheese and crackers are quickly thrown together for nourishment.

It’s not about the pretty or the perfect.

Hospitality is about the sharing.

STOP

It’s been awhile since I joined Five Minute Friday where every week there’s a new word prompt encouraging five minutes of unedited writing. I’ve missed it.

While we’re renovating our new-to-us old house (with not one room finished and many not even started), thinking about hospitality today was good for me.

What about you? Are you waiting for

  • things to slow down
  • new furniture
  • kids to grow up
  • something else

before sharing your home (or yourself) with a friend?

Please don’t.

Why not take advantage of these last few weeks of warm weather for some outdoor (it doesn’t matter what the house looks like!) hospitality? If you want someone to hold you accountable, leave a comment and tell us your plans!

Who needs YOU and the kindness you have to offer? It’s Friday afternoon—and the whole weekend’s ahead! Who you gonna call? 😉

  1. I haven’t been participating much with Five Minute Friday either and I missed it, too! It is a very hospitable place. And I agree, hospitality doesn’t have to be perfect, but that hasn’t fully settled into my heart yet. I’m determined to try!

  2. Hey! I love, love, love that you pointed out that hospital is in hospitality and that people are needing a healing hand, word, or smile.Thank you! I’m going to be meditating on this idea.

  3. I have never really noticed “hospital” before. I have no idea why – but it really does give a good perspective! Visiting from FMF – thanks for “something to think about.”

  4. Actually, just last Saturday morning, hosted 20 neighbors on our street for a Turquoise Table gathering for breakfast! It has been a remarkably busy summer, and the pace isn’t slowing yet! Always take time to create community and extend hospitality! There are those who are needing to share their lives with you!

  5. Your writing is so insightful and inspirational. Thank you.
