Das Dutchman Dishes

Welcome to My Place to Yours!  While we’re traveling this week, there’s no tablescape … but there are LOTS of dishes.  Pick a favorite and tell me what it is!

When Renaissance Man and I visit Northern Indiana, we very often stay at this quiet, Amish Country inn.  The environment is clean, peaceful, wholesome … and the food cooked from generations-old recipes is delicious.  We’ve often been here when the ground was snow-covered, but we’ve never been here in oppressive heat … until now.

Year-round, the village environment draws in locals and travelers alike with its restaurant, bakery, quaint shopping, conference center, and overnight accommodations.

As you might guess, I’m always drawn to the dishes.  I think you will be, too, so come stroll with me through the large restaurant building … and let’s see what we see.

I love this mug, and for only $6.99, I would have taken it home with me … but it couldn’t be used in the microwave or dishwasher.  Um, no …  There is no “Susan” without a dishwasher or microwave!

Of course, there had to be a little Fourth of July picnicking provision …  Yes, those ARE ants on the “paper” plates!

Have you seen these?  I hadn’t.  Plates made to look like paper plates … but they’re not.  So what do you think?  Good idea … or not?

Of course, I always look at the clearance section …

This visit, I got a “dishes” surprise when I noticed a large cabinet containing a museum-style display of Das Dutchman Essenhaus history.  Camera phone pics taken through glass aren’t the best, but I don’t think you’ll mind.

The Essenhaus opened in 1971.  Even if you live in a different part of the country, this will be a trip down Memory Lane … assuming you’re old enough to have walked it the first time!

Look at these early prices!

The next time you’re in Northern Indiana and need a good meal … or a room at the inn … check out Das Dutchman Essenhaus.  I hope they’re around for another 40+ years!

My mind keeps buzzing back to those cute bee bowls.  Which dishes are YOUR favorite?

I’ll be sharing these dishes at Tablescape Thursday at Between Naps on the Porch.

  1. Can I just share that I have had the best time catching up here this morning? You have some of your best posts ever, IMO. That’s saying something since I generally enjoy them all.

I would have loved this place, too. I’m really intrigued by those “paper” plates, and I love that whole display with the orange and green.

BTW, just thought you would be interested: Guess whose boots will be on American soil in less than a week? They won’t see Georgia clay for a while, but American soil is pretty good too.

  2. YEA! I knew it was about time for his return. Praying for his continued safety and a joyous return.

  3. What a delightful place! I can’t decide how I feel about the non-paper plates – interesting idea and nice shape … but the ants on the plate? Yuck! I felt the same what about some red/white gingham fabric with ants that I saw a few years ago. My favorite dishes are the blue/white from the 70’s (followed closely by the similar red/white). Of course, I love anything remotely like transferware, so not a stretch to choose those as faves 🙂

  4. Susan- What a great post and I love that place. I am not crazy about the ants on the plates either!’>) I had some material with ladybugs on it and made it into skirts for my granddaughters and the one started freaking out and wouldn’t put it on…she hates ants even worse.lol

I am not crazy about the “paper” plates but then I don’t really like real paper plates much anyway.

What a fun trip of memories- xo Diana

  5. What a fun trip and even more fun to look back at how the dishes (and prices) have changed over the years. Hmm…we have to pick a favorite dish…my eye caught the little yellow and white polka dot bowls. They look like the perfect size for some ice cream on these hot summer nights! Have a great weekend.

  6. Thanks for your sweet comment. I love the blue and white, of course!

  7. No way could I pick a favorite…I want them all. Thanks for taking the pictures and sharing..I feel like I had a mini-vacation. How much fun!

  8. Wow, love places like this. I would actually plan a trip just to go here :). I love the dishes I saw with the corn on them, truthfully, I like everything I saw. xo

  9. Oh, there are too many choices for me to pick one. I do not like the faux paper plates, though.

  10. do you know who the manufacturer of the rooster series plates and other stuff were? I remember seeing them at cracker barrel but didnt buy them then! Now I have decided to redo my kitchen COMPLETELY into rooster/farm/primitive and WANT THESE… Can you help!?

    • I tried to respond to you via email, but your blog is set to “no reply.” Hopefully you’ll come back here. 🙂

I’ve checked eBay and Replacements.com to see if I could ID the maker of the rooster plates you saw in this post Unfortunately, I had no luck. If you’ll send me your email address, I’ll ask my readers if they know. Good luck with your search!
