Royalty (The Wisemen): A Christmas Theme

As promised yesterday…  Today’s theme is Royalty. Like the Shepherd theme, this one may come as a surprise to some of you, but it does have its place:

  • Epiphany/Twelfth Day celebrations
  • Your house features a different part of the Christmas story in each room
  • Dinner party tables/serving stations feature the personalities in the nativity

I couldn’t decide between purple (the color of royalty) or gold… so I did inspiration boards for both!

I’d love to do a lavish purple table, but I wanted you to see a more casual version – since not all of you like “lavish”.

Me?  I like “lavish” … a lot! I guess you won’t be surprised to know this one’s my favorite, will you?

Elements to consider for a Royal theme:

  • Nativity sets – Holy Family plus the three wisemen
  • A prominent star
  • Gifts: ornate metal/wood boxes, coins, gold, frankincense, and myrrh
  • Jewels
  • Crowns
  • Camels
  • Luxurious fabrics and trims: velvet, brocade, tapestries, cording; especially gold, silver, and purple
  • Embossed textures

It’s interesting that much of what we “know” about the wisemen is based on speculation.  The Bible doesn’t tell us how many of them there were … or that they were actually kings … or exactly where they came from–or if they rode camels.

In our nativity sets, we see them huddled at the manger next to the shepherds, but in truth they weren’t there. Their trip would have taken a long time, and that is why we’re told they went to the “house” (not stable) and saw the “child” (not infant) and his mother; Matthew 2:9-11.

Most of the gifts they offered are foreign to many of us, and it’s only by learning the customs of their day that we know their significance.

But… one of their gifts we, too, can offer.

…they bowed down and worshiped him.

As I look ahead to the new year, I want to focus more on worship. I want to let the Christ Child-King of Kings direct my path – help me overcome ingrained  habits – encouraging me (as Ann Voskamp says) to “only speak words that make souls stronger”.  As for the wisemen, it will likely be a long, difficult one at times, but oh the reward that lies ahead.

What spiritual journey do you need to take in the new year?  I want to be here to encourage you.

This post is part of the Themes of Christmas series. Previous themes are all listed HERE. Two more days…
