Lord of the Rings 1st Birthday Party … and How to Make Hobbit Feet

4/22/13 update:  This party received the Best Decorations badge from Party Pail for the hard work, creativity, and dedication of Little Sir’s parents to making their son’s birthday spectacular!

We like stories in our family, especially when they include big antics of little boys … and last week was full of them.  It’s hard to believe that an entire year has passed since Little Sir’s stories began

Little Man and Little Sir’s parents have a philosophy:
Because one-year-olds are too young to choose their own birthday party theme, the parents get to pick the one THEY want … since it’s the only time they’ll be able to.  Guess what theme Mommy and Daddy wanted?

It was a magical afternoon complete with an Elvish-alphabet Happy Birthday banner, delicious food …

a hobbit hole cake …

presents for Little Sir … a successful demolition of the first birthday cupcake …

and hobbit feet for Little Man.  He had a blast!

Want to make hobbit feet for the little ones in your life?  Here’s how Daughter the Younger did it …

Take a plain pair of socks and cut away most of the bottom of each sock, leaving an ankle band and a little strip to go between two toes (like flip-flops).

Cut two pieces of faux fur (available at fabric and craft stores) to fit the upper portion of the socks.  Attach with fabric glue. If you want them to last longer, sew on the fur instead.

So there you go.  An inexpensive, super-easy way to turn a pair of sweet little feet into hairy hobbit feet … for the next time a little one you know needs a hobbit costume.

Caution:  This is really like letting your little one run around bare-footed, so only use this idea when they’ll be in a safe environment.  This is not a good idea for walking on the street or a rough surface where they could get hurt.

I’ve never read J. R. R. Tolkien’s books … or seen the movies. I got an education just attending our one-year-old’s birthday party.  How about you?  Are you a Lord of the Rings fan?

  1. What a darling party, Susan! No, I’ve not read the “Lord of the Rings” series, either, but have “children” who have, and now our grandson is “into” the series. I will share this party idea with his mother.

    Enjoy this lovely spring day!

  2. What a fun party!I sent a link to my son-in-law who is a LOTR fan. I’ve read The Hobbit, and seen the movies, but I’m not so into it as he is.

  3. Too cute….well since our fourth son was born on Tolkien’s birthday..what else do I have to say? I love the photos also!

  4. Fun, fun party for the little guy! What a clever mom to dream up the Hobbit feet.

  5. That is a SUPER CUTE idea for a party theme!!! I never read or saw “The Lord of the Rings” movies, but there was enough information in TV ads and such that I got the gist. They really gave the theme a run for the money!!!! The Hobbit feet are just too cute!!! He won’t remember this birthday party, but the photos will show him years on down the line just how much Mommy & Daddy cared! Great job!

  6. Oh my word, this is so cute and so creative. I love it. Thanks so much for joining Inspire Me. Hugs, Marty

  7. I’m a great fan of The Hobbit, in fact I’m also thinking of organizing a party with that theme. It’s good that I stumbled on your blog, now I know how to do the hobbit feet! I better try this later and see if it will work on my kid’s feet. Hehe! I bet he will enjoy it since he also loves watching the Lord of the Rings. 🙂
