THE GIFT REGISTRY: Day 20 of 31 Days of Creative Caring

I recently had the pleasure of attending a “meet the newlyweds” shower.  The groom’s family lives in our community, but he’s been away at college for several years … then married out of state.  Friends of the parents hosted the event.  Rather than yet another please give us more gifts shower, this young couple requested that guests bring items to equip the soon-to-be-complete Samaritan House.

Some of you may remember that Samaritan House is the women’s shelter where I did these Lavished and Adored tablescapes.Since 1987, Samaritan House staff and volunteers have put into practice the lesson of the Good Samaritan. As Jesus taught us to go and be good neighbors to those in need, Samaritan House shares housing, counseling, social services and encouragement with women (and often their children) who are in desperate situations.  It’s an amazing ministry … and one that long ago outgrew its present space.

Using the bridal registry at Wal-Mart, Samaritan House staff registered houseware items (bedding, dishes, small appliances, etc.).  Guests used the registry just as we would have if we were actually shopping for the couple.

Upon arriving at the under-construction new Samaritan House, we found a gazebo bedecked with all the festivities of an outdoor party … a refreshingly selfless young couple … and lots of new housewares for the new space.

How I love this example of creative caring!  Rather than more “stuff” for themselves, this bride and groom chose to ensure that others who really need things will have them.  It was a delight to give to Samaritan House in honor of Elizabeth and David.  I suspect a marriage built on such a strong foundation of caring will serve them (and those around them) very well! Oh, that more of us will choose caring over accumulating…

Other “in honor of” events that could be used to benefit a favorite charity:

  • Birthday
  • Retirement
  • Graduation
  • Anniversary
  • Christmas

What others can you think of?

Comments

  1. What a wonderful idea. More people need to do this.

  2. Such a great idea!

    Healthy Pink Snacks
    Have an enjoyable Pink Saturday!

  3. A billion percent laudable on the part of these young people! I agree that it is a strong foundation upon which to build a marriage!

  4. I love this idea! Around here, newlywed couples are feted with so many showers and parties that often it becomes an exercise in creativity for hosts to come up with a theme not covered. Let’s be honest, when it gets like that, they don’t “need” a shower. This is a wonderful alternative that I am going to keep in mind. I love the idea.

  5. Love is giving (charity), so this couple is certainly off to a good start.
